How we rate casinos

Every score on this site comes out of the table below. It is arithmetic, not opinion, and it is published so that you can tell us it is weighted wrongly.

Last updated 43 casinos scoredCeiling 9.7

A casino rating is worth nothing if you cannot see how it was arrived at. Ours is a sum of components, each one tied to something we could check: a licence number, a payment method that worked, a withdrawal that arrived, a figure the operator publishes. Nothing in the formula rewards the size of a commission.

ComponentPointsWhat has to be true
Starting score6.0Every casino that clears our entry checks starts here.
Welcome offer stated in rands+1.3An offer in dollars or euros earns +0.6. A rand figure means you can work out the wagering without a conversion.
South African licence+0.5A National Gambling Board or provincial board licence, or a South African bookmaker licence.
Local payment rails+0.4Instant EFT, Ozow, Capitec Pay, SiD, EasyEFT, 1Voucher, OTT or Blu Voucher, SnapScan, Zapper.
Breadth of bankingup to +0.8Scored on the number of distinct deposit and withdrawal routes, capped at five.
Game rangeup to +0.72Slots, table games, video poker, live tables, scratch cards, crash games — counted, capped at eight categories.
Years in operationup to +0.68Roughly 0.045 a year, capped at fifteen years. Age is evidence of paying out, but it is the smallest component here.
Live dealer tables+0.5Present and open to South African accounts.
Working mobile site or app+0.4A mobile cashier and a mobile lobby that load on a phone browser, not a marketing page that promises them.
Published payout percentage+0.3The operator states an RTP or audit figure that can be checked.
Entry deposit of R100 or less+0.2A casino you can try with a single voucher.
Depth of published detailup to +0.4How much of the cashier, the bonus terms and the licence record the operator publishes openly, and how much has to be asked for.
Ceiling9.7Nothing scores 10. There is always a clause somewhere that is not published.

Why the bonus is worth so little

A welcome offer is the loudest number on any casino page and the least useful. R10 000 at 50× wagering is worth less than R1 500 at 10×, and the second one almost never gets advertised. So the formula gives a small credit for an offer that is stated in rands at all — because that means you can do the wagering arithmetic without a currency conversion — and no credit whatsoever for how big the headline is.

Why the local components exist

A South African licence, an Instant EFT rail and a R50 entry deposit are worth points because each one removes a real obstacle. A licensed operator can be complained about to a board in this country. An Instant EFT rail means your bank will not decline the transaction as a foreign gambling charge. A low entry means you can test a withdrawal with money you can afford to lose while you find out whether the withdrawal works at all.

What the score is not

  • It is not a prediction that you will win. No casino on any list anywhere changes the house edge in your favour.
  • It is not permanent. Operators change payment providers, lose licences and get bought. A score is the state of play on the date printed at the top of the review.
  • It is not a ranking of trustworthiness alone. A well-run offshore casino can outscore a licensed local one on breadth of games while still leaving you without a local regulator to complain to. Read the caution list, not just the number.

Money and independence

This is an independent South African casino guide. We are not an operator and we do not take bets. Every casino on this site is checked against its licence record, its published cashier page and its full bonus terms before it is written up — which is why some well-known brands never appear here.

We earn a commission when a reader signs up through one of our links. That commission never buys a place in the table or a higher score: the scoring method is published in full on how we rate casinos, and the same formula is applied to operators we have no arrangement with.

Where a casino refuses to answer a factual question — who holds the licence, what the payout audit says, how long a withdrawal takes — we record the refusal on the review page instead of filling the gap with a guess. An empty field on this site means we could not source it, not that it does not matter.
