Casino software: who actually builds the games you play

A casino is a shopfront. The games behind it come from a handful of studios, and which studio a site licenses tells you more about the experience than any bonus.

Last updated 43 casinos indexed by engine

Almost nobody who runs a casino writes the games. The operator licenses a lobby from one or more studios, plugs a payment layer underneath and puts its own name on top. That is why two sites with different branding can feel identical: same reels, same paytables, same maths, different logo.

For a South African player the studio matters for four practical reasons. It sets the return-to-player range. It decides whether there is a demo mode you can open without registering. It decides how heavy the lobby is in mobile data. And because studios license by territory, it quietly decides whether your account gets to keep playing a game next year.

The RTP band is not a promise about your session. It is the figure the game settles towards over millions of spins, and a studio can ship the same title at two different RTPs for two different operators. Where a casino publishes its own audited figure we record it on the review page; where it does not, we say so rather than quoting the studio brochure.

Why RTG dominates here

Follow the money and it is not mysterious. RTG licenses to operators that accept rand accounts and it never pulled out of the South African market when the regulatory picture got murky in the late 2000s. The bigger European studios did, or never arrived. Two decades later the lobby you see at a rand casino is largely the lobby RTG kept supplying. It is worth knowing that this is a licensing accident rather than a verdict on quality.

The practical consequence: if a game you like is an RTG title, you can usually find it at three or four sites on this list and shop for the better bonus terms. If it is a NetEnt or Pragmatic title, your choice of casino narrows sharply.

The same lobby on a different machine

The engine is only half of it. The other half is what you open it on, and that changes which titles load, whether a demo runs at all and how much of your data bundle a session costs. These three pages take the platforms one at a time.
